400g strong white flour
50g golden caster sugar
7g instant dried yeast
½ teaspoon salt
40ml vegetable oil
2 large free-range eggs,
1 large free-range egg yolk
poppy seeds (optional)
Today a recipe for a very tasty plaited bread, for Hanukkah or any other family gathering :)) The bread is easy to make, it looks very beautiful, many people can eat it and it is incredibly delicious. We are on it!
How to make Challa
Weigh the flour.
Put it into a large bowl.
Make a well in the middle.
Add the sugar to it.
Add the yeast on one side of the flour and the salt on the other
Rub it all together using your fingertips.
Put the oil, yolk and 1 egg in another bowl.
Whisk the egg mixture frothy.
Make a well and pour in the egg-mixture..
Mix it all together using a fork.
Then knead it by hand.
Finally mix it 10 minutes in a stand mixer.
The dough should be smooth and elastic now
Cover it with a warm, moist tea towel.
Let the dough rise for 2 hours.
Tip the dough from the bowl on greased paper.
Knock the dough back with the heel of your hand.
Divide into 3 more or less equal pieces.
Roll into snakes and braid them neatly.
Cover in cling film and let rise for 30 minutes more.
Preheat the oven to 200°C or 180°C Fan
Beat the last egg and brush it on the braid.
Repeat before it goes into the oven.
Bake the Challa in 30 - 35 minutes golden.
Allow the bread to cool on the baking tray then on a wire rack
Slice the bread when it is on room temperature.
Delicious with butter and jam!
