The remarkable illustrations in the book are funny and touching at the same time. When the book appeared in 1964, it was an immediate success. It was translated into English, German, South-African and Japanese. Worldwide adults have fond memories of this book. The themes of the book are universal and timeless, so the book is not 'old', it continues to fascinate children, even today.
