One of the most beautiful books about loss is Cry, heart, but never break, by the Danish children's author Glenn Ringtved, in our opinion. He has already written many cheerful children's books, but when the grandmother of his children died, he wrote this book.
The book moves you but also comforts children, in a subtle way. At the top of the page, the book is read by Mister Walker, in English. Sadly this book is not translated into Dutch.
The moving illustrations are by beloved Danish illustrator Charlotte Pardi. The sad faces of the children and also the heavy face of Dood, who is much more sympathetic than you would expect, are very beautifully depicted. Like the scythe at the door, which sensitive Death leaves outside, to spare the children. The light colours match the story perfectly. Beautiful!
3 radiant, hopeful stars for Cry, Heart, but never break from all the snazzie readers and the young listeners!
