Every year on April 22nd it is Earth Day, one day a year on which we reflect on what the earth means to us. By planning activities and campaigning on this special day every year, De stichting Dag van de Aarde hopes that everyone will become more aware that we need to take good care of our planet if we want the earth to still exist in the future.
In 2002 Earth Day was launched in the Netherlands by De Stichting Dag van de Aarde. The emphasis was on awareness and enjoying the beauty of the earth. By planning activities and campaigning on this special day every year, De stichting Dag van de Aarde hopes that everyone will become more aware that we need to take good care of our planet if we want the earth to still exist in the future.
In 2006 De Krant van de Aarde was published in the Netherlands. It was a festival newspaper for Earth Day. The foundation wanted to use the newspaper to bring the beauty of the earth to the attention of the Dutch, all year round.
The chairman of the Earth Day Association USA came especially to the Netherlands, to start the Earth Day activities in the Netherlands. Now the newspaper has now grown into much more than that!
In 2009 on April 22 a resolution was passed by the United Nations to live in harmony with nature and the earth. Because the earth and its eco systems is the home of humans, April 22 was declared International Earth Day.
In 2016, the Newspaper of the Earth started a collaboration with the BBC EARTH - Planet Earth series. By which unique images of the beauty of the Earth were shown to the readers. De Krant van de Aarde has now grown into a medium with an independent editorial staff and a circulation of 50,000 and collaborates with many other organizations.
