coloured cardstock
scissors
small white pompoms
hobby glue
pipe cleaners & a wire cutter
hole puncher
watercolours and paint brushes
white tissue paper
coloured cotton yarn
a wooden embroidery hoop
Without any doubt, we believe The Very Hungry Caterpillar is the best picture book that exists about the life of the butterfly and it's metamorphosis. Our mini-monsters never got (or get) tired of the story with the beautifully coloured pictures. Today we are crafting our own butterfly life cycle with them, because hurrah, spring is on it's way!
The Butterflies lay eggs
How to make leaves with Butterfly eggs
Draw a leaf on thick cardboard.
Cut it out and trace it.
Cut out the leaves.
Draw nerves on it.
Stick the white pompoms on the leaves.
And look ... eggs are lying on a leaf.
Caterpillars crawl out of the eggs
How to make the Caterpillars
Cut some more leaves.
Press in nerves with a skewer.
Draw the nerves on.
Press in the nerves again.
Twist caterpillars of pipe cleaners.
Stick the caterpillars on the leaves.
Punch holes in the leaves.
The caterpillars will pupate
How to make cocoons with fat caterpillars inside
Get water colours, brushes and tissue paper.
Paint the 3 tissues brown and green.
String wooden beads on the yarn.
String from small to large.
Cut the dried painted tissues into strips.
Wrap the beads in the strips of tissue paper.

How to make the Butterflies
Paint the tissues with watercolour.
Let the paint dry completely.
Cut pieces of pipe cleaner.
Wrinkle the tissue paper.
Wrap pieces of pipe cleaner around the butterflies.
The butterflies look colourfoul and lovely!
How to put the Butterfly cycle together
Stick on fase 1, the Butterfly eggs.
Stick on fase ll, which are the caterpillars.
Stick on some more leaves here and there.
Place the pupa's in and on the leaves circle.
Stick the Butterflies on and hang the Butterfly cycle.
