Today we are making a beautiful ancient Egyptian book that is not really a book at all. Then what is it? The name of this blog actually gives it away, it is a secret hiding place. You can hide something in this 'book'. Your collection of stones and minerals or your special Lego figures, for example. What is your treasure?
How you make an Egyptian book
Cut off the flaps on top of the boxes.
Now your boxes should look like this.
Fold the cover open and draw lines to cut to size.
Cut the cover to the right size.
Paint the cover golden, let the paint dry.
Paint the other side gold and let it dry.
Paint the boxes inside golden as well.
Let the boxes dry, then paint the outside and let the paint dry again
Meanwhile you make the scarab
Saw the 8cm ball in half.
Saw a piece of both halves.
Vacuum the ball and your workspace.
Paint both parts then stick together.
While the paint dries you continue with the cover
Decorate the cover of the book with paint.
Paint stripes in various colours.
We paint them all around the front.
Spread glue on the underside of 1 box.
Press it inside the cover in the center.
Close the book and let the glue dry.
Spread glue over the underside of box 2.
Put box 2 over box 1 with the glue side up and press the book closed
Let the glue dry with a heavy book on top.
Cut two wings out of cardboard for the holy scarab.
Paint both wings in the same colour as the bug.
Decorate the scarab with painted stripes too.
Stick a shiny 'sun' between the front legs of the scarab.
Stick the scarab on the box and hide your treasures inside.
We made this book with inspiration and directions from Baker Ross craft supplies. This was our last Egyptian craft of the month, have fun with it!
