In the Silver Books series Dutch Heroes are featured (although the word heroes no longer always applies). The men and to a lesser extent the women from our Dutch History play the lead role, as Dutch children used to learn in school.
The Man on the Moon is written by Bies van Ede with illustrations by Eliane Gerrits. At the back of the booklet there is a page with a brief overview of the life of the main character in the booklet, mathematician and physicist/inventor Christiaan Huygens.
The brothers Constantijn Jr and Christiaan Huygens came from an intelligent and well-to-do family. Father Constantijn Huygens was a diplomat and confidante of the Stadtholder and also a meritorious poet,
Son Constantijn juniorwas also a Statesman / Chronicle writer and astronomer, with a great interest in science. Together the Huygens brothers would invent the telescope with which Christiaan would make his famous discoveries. Such as discovering the rings of Saturn and all that in the 17th century!
