A Mumbai Sandwich

is tasty but hot & spicy!
Lunch, Sandwich, With Cheese, Asian, With fresh vegetables, and Snacks

Green Chutney
mint leaves, 1 small handful
coriander leaves, 1 large handful
1–2 green chillies, depending on the heat
1 cm piece of ginger, peeled
lemon juice & pinch of salt

Masala mix
a pinch of ground cumin
a pinch of ground cinnamon
a pinch of amchur powder
a pinch black pepper & salt

For the Sandwich
2 slices of white bread
1 garlic clove, cut in half
butter
1/4 cucumber, sliced
1 tomato, sliced
1 red onion, sliced
grated cheese (any melting cheese)

optional
lettuce
tomato

The Mumbai Sandwich is a popular Street Food in India, you can buy this sandwich everywhere in the city. But be warned: the Mumbai is hot !! Because we are not big fans of very hot food I started out carefully, afterwards it could have been even a bit more careful ><

A second thing is the thick layer of butter, which would not have been necessary for us, with hindsight. It is understandable that it makes the sandwich creamy but the cheese does that as well. This is only our opinion, so chili, butter, cheese, use it to your taste.

How to make the Mumbai Sandwich
Start by making the (hot) chutney and the spice-mixture

The green chilli was very hot, half would have been enough.

Put the lemon juice and piece of ginger in the blender.

Wash the chilli peppers and the herbs and dry well.

Chop chilli and herbs roughly then put them in the blender.

Blitz the chutney until well combined.

Spoon into a bowl and put it aside.

Masala mix: stir the spices together.

How to make the Mumbai Sandwich

Rub garlic on the bread then generously spread on butter and chutney.

Cover the slice with cucumber then sprinkle on some masala mix.

Cover the cucumber with tomato the sprinkle on some masala mix.

Top the tomato with cheese and onion then sprinkle with masala.

Top with the second bread slice and toast the sandwich.

Serve the Mumbai Sandwich with tomato ketchup on the side.
