Peggy Poppe - a Flemish writer - wrote this moving children's book Een pop voor Hannah (A doll for Hannah). It is a true story, 'Esther' was her Grandmother. Peggy Poppe's mother is 'Hannah' and you can still go see the doll from the story in the Belgian Museum Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen.
Kazerne Dossin is now a museum, but between 1942 and 1944 it was a prison where thousands of Jews and hundreds of Roma and Sinti were deported to Auschwitz - Birkenau. The museum gives a realistic picture of the unimaginably tragic events in the second world war.
Ann de Bode made the beautiful, moving paintings with which the book is illustrated. The defeat in the faces of the people in the paintings give a very tragic charge to the story and the sober sepia colour scheme transports you back in time. A heartbreaking and very important book!
3 forever radiant stars for Een pop voor Hannah (A doll for Hannah), from our young listeners and their readers!
