The weather is lovely after the solstice and the little monsters are running around outside. We make magic sun wands for Saint John's Day Festival, with ribbons that flutter in the breeze as you run around with them. That's something the little monsters really love. We made a pattern by tracing some tableware, but for you we have made a pattern to download, in PDF :))
How to make a sun wand
We traced some dinnerware and made a PDF of it.
Print and cut it out or make your own pattern.
Pin the pattern on the various shades of felt.
Neatly cut out the felt, you need one from every part.
Pin the sun together as well as the 3 circles.
Tie on between the parts of the sun.
Sew them thogether using the blanket stitch.
A quick reminder (should you need it), this is how the blanket stitch works:
Insert your needle, don't pull your thread all the way through but leave a little loop, stick your needle through the loop
Now you pull the thread tightly.
Stick the needle in a little further.
And repeat the stich with the loop.
Sew round but leave a filling gap.
Fill the sun up and set it aside, with the thread and needle hanging on
Sew the three circles
Tie on on the largest circle.
Place the 2 smaller circles on top.
Sew all around using a tiny running stich.
Tie on in the center of the sun and pin the largest circle on top of the sun
Sew the largest circle on using tiny running stitches.
Tie off and leave the filling gap still open!
Paint the stick yellow or orange.
Let it dry a little while.
Paint accents with the 2nd color.
Let the paint dry again.
Take a break so that the paint is completely dry before you continue
Tie the ribbons on the stick.
Poke the stick into the gap with some glue.
Let the glue dry a moment.
Now sew the filling gap tightly closed.
Your magic sun wand is ready, you can take it outside!
Happy Saint John's Day Festival!
