Klei sarcofaag side

We already made the sarcophagus and the mummie, today we make the objects that belong with it, such as the canopes. In the Old Egyptian Kingdom the canopic jars were rarely inscribed and the lids were plain. In the Middle Kingdom canopic jar inscriptions were more usual and the lids often resembled the human head.

By the 19th dynastie canopic jars were inscribed and each of the 4 lids depicted a son of Horus, the god with the falcon head (god of the sky and of kingship). They were the guardians of the stomach (Duamutef, the jackal-headed god), intestines (Qebehsenuef, the falcon-headed god) , lungs (Hapi, the baboon-headed god) and liver (Imsety, the human-headed god).
