Because Animal Day is not only for pets we read today, on Dutch National Animal Day, a lovely book to the little ones: Hello Birds, what do you say? by Dutch author/illustrator Loes Botman. We take good care of the wild birds in our garden, which is very green so there is a lot of shelter for the birds, because there are always cats lurking close by! Because of lack of green garden it's hard to find food for the wild birds.

In addition, we feed the birds all year round, as requested by the Bird Protection Society. We buy special organic bird food because the birds suffer a lot from pesticides in bird food (hard to believe, right?), which is often put in the garden with the best intentions. Just like we did before we knew that the bird food is sprayed with very nasty, toxic pesticides.

With this book we ask you to pay close attention if you feed the wild birds. In the beautiful pastel drawings by Loes Botman you see all the wild birds that visit our garden daily. Except for Swans, Ducks and Coots of course :) In summer the birds eat lots of insects from our garden but they also eat the food we put out for them.

The fun of taking the book outside and ask our little monsters what does this bird say? They listen very well and then learn to recognize the different bird sounds the birds make, providing you keep it up. A little treasure, is this book!

3 bright shining stars for Hello Birds, What Do You Say?, from our young listeners and their out-loud readers!
