What do you need?
Wool for needles number 10
knitting needles 10 (European)
big embroidery needle
1/2 meter ribcord (lining)
matching color yarn
1/2 meter faux leather
To knit a bag is just as hard as knitting a snowman, NOT hard at all! All you do is knit straight pieces and sew them together. And using wool and needles number 10 you get a quick result.
How to make the bag
- Start with casting on 30 stitches
- Knit 1 needle in knit stitch, 1 needle in purl stitch until your knitting is 35 cm long
- Then bind off
Mnemonic! How to do a knit stitch
- Hold the needle with the stitches in your left hand, the empty needle in your right hand.
- The thread you knit with (attached to the ball of wool) is on the back of your knitting.
Knit stitch: insert the needle front to back in the first loop.
Flip over: wrap the yarn back to front in between the needles.
Slip through: pull the yarn up through the loop.
Slide off: Let the stitch slide off the left needle onto the right.
How to do a purl stitch
- Turn your knitting front to back.
- You find the thread you knit with is now on the front of your knitting.
Pearl stitch: insert the needle back to front into the first loop.
Wrap the yarn front to back in between the needles.
Slip through: pull the yarn through the loop.
Slide off: Let the stitch slide from the left onto the right needle.

This is the outside of your knitting, in knit stitch. Cast off when you've reached 35 cm length.
This is how the inside of your knitting looks, in purl stitch.
Knit for a change the surround first, 1 side knit stitch / 1 side purl till app. 86 cm. Cast off.
You have knitted the front and the surround of your bag. Now you knit the back in exactly the same way.
Pin the surround - outsides on the inside - on one of the sides.
Sew with a sewing stitch the pinned sides together.
Pin and stitch the second side in the same way together.
To see what the bag will look like you turn the knitting inside out.
No we start on sewing the lining. We use a coarse ribcord but any firm fabric will do nicely to line your bag. Cut a strip of the fabric to use in the middle of the bag of 86x7 cm + 2 cm extra all around for the hems, in total 90x11 cm.
Cut off two pieces of fabric the size of your bag + a 2 cm marge for the hem.
Pin and sew the lining together just as you did with the knitting, you end up with a bag.
Leave the topside of the lining open and slide the lining bag in the knitted one.
Finish the hems with a zigzag stitch.
Fold the top edge inside out.
Pin the lining in the bag.
Turn the bag inside out.
Sew the lining with little stitchtes firmly inside the bag.
This is how the inside looks when finished.
and this is how the bag looks on the outside.
Finally we make handles from faux leather.
Draw with a textile marker two strips of 55x10 cm.
Cut out the two strips on the marked lines.
Fold the strips in half, the leather inside and pin them together.
Sew the leather strips 1 cm from the edge together.
Turn the strips inside out with a wooden ladle.
Now the 'leather' is on the outside.
Place some heavy books on the handles.
Use eyelets to attach the handles.
Keep the eyelets in place and draw a cross inside.
Snip the cross on the lining open inside, don't cut the wool.
Hammer 4 rings in your bag, by the instructions on the package.
Make a vertical cut in the handles at the top and bottom end and stick them through the rings from the outside in.
Tie the ends in a knot on the inside.
The bag is finished!
The minute it's finished we take the bag with us.
