Make your own Roman Coins

with salt dough
Spring, Painting, and Claying

What do you need?
1 cup flour
½ cup salt
½ cup water
tooth sticks
wooden skewers
DAS air drying clay
black acrylic paint and brush
gold & silver acrylic paint
paint brushes
clear varnish, matte

Last week we made a money bag, today we make 'old' Roman coins to put in it. First we draw some simple designs, for the front and back. For inspiration you have google ;)) When the coins have dried we paint them gold en silver. You can have fun playing with them!

How to make 'Old' Roman Coins

Make a drawing first.

Do not get carried away, keep it simple >|<

Mix flour and salt with water.

Knead a supple dough.

We make stamps with the salt dough

Roll some balls from dough.

Flatten the dough balls.

Press in your designs with sticks.

Preheat the oven to 170°C and place a sheet of parchment paper on the baking tray

Bake the stamps 15 - 20 minutes.

Allow the stamps to cool.

Sadly one stamp turned out bad.

Use a front and back design

Place a small ball of clay between the two stamps, press them firmly together then peel the clay coin gently from the stamps

Allow the clay to dry for two days.

Sand the edges until smooth.

Paint the coins black.

With the toddlers we paint stones, golden nuggets! ;)) Allow the paint to dry completely.

Paint the coins gold & silver, let the paint dry again.

Optional: Give the coins a coat of varnish, to keep them in good condition. Have fun with your Roman Coins!
