For Dutchies weighing & measuring is easy: 1 kilo = 2 pounds = 10 ounces = 1000 grams; 1 pound = 5 ounces = 500 grams; 1 ounce = 100 grams, we learn it in primary school.
When making recipes from the United States and sometimes also from the United Kingdom the different sizes with which they measure are a puzzle for many of the Dutch.
On top of it both countries use cups, but the content of those cups are not the same! And now we are only talking about 2 countries where they measure in cups! Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Korea use cups to measure too, but they sometimes differ too! Their recipes we skip immediately, to avoid a nervous kitchen- breakdown!
The USA cup is 240 grams, ½ cup is 120 grams, ¼ cup is 60 grams. And what do you say when we tell you we found a great set of USA measuring cups and spoons here, which are made from bamboo and corn to replace plastic. Just perfect for snazzie!
The UK cup is 250 grams, ½ cup is 125 grams, ¼ cup is 60 grams. By coincidence we hear that there are measuring cups with British sizes for sale at Dille & Kamille. Not plastic but of glass and it has dry and wet sizes. Great, we are on our way already! But ... the Brits do not only cook and bake with cups, there are also pounds; ounces; fluid ounces and pints to consider :(
Fortunately in the UK recipes you increasingly come across two measuring systems, the original British and 'our' grams and milliliters. Such a big improvement for Dutch kitchen princesses and -princes! But the USA recipes persist in measuring in cups etc. So a set of measuring cups is a great thing to have!
