Last year we sowed carrots, radishes and dandelion lettuce. This year we sow carrots and radishes again but instead of lettuce we sow spring onions. Snails love dandelion lettuce and we have a lot of snails in our garden so our lettuce was half-eaten last year.
Because we don't like to murder the snails and we don't like chemicals in our garden, we chose to sow onions. Insects don't like onions so it keeps them away from our carrots and radishes. An ecological solution to chase the insects away, that's what we like!
Press a slat or broomstick in the soil for straight lines.
Take a handful of sand and mix it with the seeds.
Our sand is wet, dry sand works better to divide the seeds.
Sprinkle the sand in the lines and cover it up with sand or soil.
Spring onion seeds are black and look like this, you can also mix it with sand so it divides better.
Sprinkle the seeds in the shallow lines and cover them with a thin layer of soil.
Put the empty bags on the spot, to remember where which seeds are.
Jona waters the soil generously. This chore needs to be done every day now, depending on the weather.
The bugs come above ground, they don't like so much water! Jona doesn't care but I'm glad when they disappear again.
To be continued!
