100g Gruyere, grated
100ml crème fraiche
½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 slices white bread without crusts
50g cooked ham, sliced
a small piece soft butter
On the first day of the New Year we make delicious French mini croques monsieur, a fun bite that everyone likes. Also handy, you can make these snacks a day in advance. Then keep the toasties ;) in the vegetable section of the fridge and bake them a day later.
How to make a Croque Monsieur (or two)
Cut the crusts from the bread (oops! We forgot that!)
Grate 100g Gruyere into a small bowl.
Season with pepper, salt and mustard.
Stir it all together until combined.
Spread half the cheese mixture on 2 slices of bread.
Cover the cheese mixture with a slice of ham.
Place a second slice of bread on top of the ham.
Just in the nick of time we see that we still have to cut the crusts off the bread!
Preheat the oven to 190°C - 170°C Fan and place baking paper on the baking tray
Spread butter on the bread, place the buttered side on the tray.
Spread the remaining cheese mixture on the other side.
Cover the cheese mixture with the rest of the grated gruyere.
Bake the Croques Monsieur in 20 minutes until golden.
Place the croques monsieur on a cutting board, cut each into 3 strips.
Cut the strips also in thirds and serve the bites immediately.
Happy New Year!
