Our National History lessons at primary school differ from school to school. There are schools that find it too old-fashioned or not in keeping with the present times. But we enjoy reading about Hugo Grotius for example, a man who was a peacemaker and far ahead of his time.
Moreover, we also visited Loevestein Castle, where Hugo Grotius was imprisoned. There we saw with our own eyes the bookcase in which he escaped. Very special for the mini monsters to walk around the castle and see all the preserved objects from long ago. Especially swords and armor of course!
That is why we are pleased with a series of books for young readers, about leading figures in Dutch history. Although not all of them were heroes of course! But you can learn from the past and we like the facts. Peter Smit wrote the book and the nice illustrations are by graphic designer Ronald Slabbers.
