In India, beautifully coloured patterns are sprinkled on the ground for Diwali, with coloured sand and/or rice flour. Making such beautiful patterns is quite an art and that art is called Rangoli. Rangoli simply translated means 'a creative expression through colour'.
Today we also want to make a beautifully coloured rangoli. But then one that you can put anywhere you like and that you can use again next year ;)) We make our rangoli from paper and cardboard, with a special technique which in English we call quilling (in Dutch: filigraan).
How to make a Rangoli using paper
Trace a plate on coloured cardboard
Cut out the circle neatly.
Print and cut out the PDF.
Place the star on the circle and trace it using a pencil.
Please Note! With hindsight it is much easier to cut out the star now!!
Roll the 2cm strip around the tea light.
Glue the strip.
Later you will stick the roll in the center of the star.
Now you can put the light in it and when it burns out you can easily replace it
How to make the quilling decorations
Stick a thin strip paper in between the quilling tool.
Roll the paper between thumb and forefinger.
Stick the end of the roll on with glue.
You can make a drop by squeezing one side of the roll.
Make more drops in the same way.
Then you can make different patterns with it.
Make different types of shapes.
Make various shapes with different colors, you already know two:
- a small roll
- a drop
Make a large roll by unwinding a small roll in a bottle cap
With this you can make different larger shapes such as
- a drop, squeeze 1 side of a roll
- a paisley shape, squeeze one side, then bend the top
- an oval, pinch in on both sides of the roll
Also there a lot of videos online with examples
Measure the center of the star.
Stick on the large 2 cm roll.
Stick the droplets around it.
Make small rolls in two colours.
Let green round, squeeze yellow on both sides.
Stick both around, also roll paisley shapes.
Roll big drops and stick them on too.
Roll larger pink circles in bottle caps.
Make bigger rolls, let the end stick out.
Finish the pattern but do not stick it on yet!
Cut out the star first (if you didn't do it in the beginning).
Finish the pattern to your liking and then stick it on.
Place the tea light in the middle of your Rangoli and you are ready!
If you like you can place your Rangoli on a pretty platter and put more lights around it, just like we do!
Shub Diwali! or Happy Shivali!
