For this terrific craft we have to sincerly thank ROTEB. What's ROTEB? Rotterdams municipal collection service or in short The Garbage Man. But these theys they do a lot more than just collecting garbage.
What do the letters R-O-T-E-B- actually mean?
Funny you ask!
Until the year 2005:
R means Cleaning
O means Disinfection
T means Transport (collecting garbage and rubbish)
E means and
B means Fire Brigade (all in Dutch of course)
Since the year 2005 the meaning of the letters is changed into:
Rotterdams
Enterprising
Proud
Effective
Reliable
Isn't that funny? But what do they actually do now?
The ROTEB is still doing everything the letters in the first row stand for. But now we understand better why a clean environment is so important for humans and animals.
- Therefore waste is now collected separately so that it can be recycled (re-used).
- Surface water is cleaned so that we have enough clean drinking water.
- Garden waste is made into compost that's an organic fertilizer.
- Our redundant clothing is shipped to poor countries.
- Old electronics are being destroyed in a way that does no harm to our environment.
Jan the Garbage Man comes to school to tell why a clean town or city is so important.
Jan tells not only about the importance of recycling but also how and what to recycle.
With at the end some cool recycle tips, like how to make envelopes from advertising brochures.
Jan de Garbage Man was also at Madelief's school and she wants to share it with our young snazzie readers. So here she shows you how to do it, you can download the template.
Print and cut out the template.
Trace the template on a nice page.
Cut out the shape you've drawn.
Fold the bottom in and pull it out again.
Fold the side strips on both sides inward.
Spread glue on both side strips.
Press the bottom onto the glue.
When the glue dried you can use the envelope.
Stick on labels if you want to post it.
Madelief makes a lot of different ones, superfun!
They're brillant! You should be so lucky to find one in the letterbox or on the doormat ;)
