Studio Ghibli is a Japanese film studio in which founder Hayao Miyazaki releases anime films. From himself and from a number of other renowned anime artists such as Isao Takahata and Hiromasa Yonebayashi.
A good thing is that the distibution rights are sold to Disney Studios but they have no say in the artistic content of the films. As Miyazaki emailed to Disney when Spirited Away in American management was released: NO CUTS. This fortunately keeps the Japanese character preserved and the famous Disney Sauce stays absent! Here's a small selection of our most beloved anime films.
1984 - Science fiction - a 1000 years after WWll Princess Nausicaä saves her people.
1988 - Isao Takahata - the love between a brother and sister, black and moving.
1988 - A feelgood film - funny and sweet with a leading role for Totoro.
1989 - Miyazaki - Fairytale - A young witch discovers the world and herself.
In 1997 Princess Mononoke is released, also known as Mononoke Hime and this film is the breakthrough for Miyazaki and Ghibli Studios in the Western world. It is a film that is different from the previously-made films. The struggle of people who are busy destroying the earth, against the gods, who want to prevent this is depicted. Therefore there is more violence in this film than in previous Ghibli films. It is also exciting and as frequently in Miyazaki films: his heroine Mononoke is not all bad and not all good, just human. ;)
1997 - fantasy legend - about the destruction of Earth in the Muromachi period (1333-1568).
2004 - fantasy - With dangerous wizard Howl and the curse of a witch. A beautiful but difficult theme.
2008 - Miyazaki's goldfish princess about the pollution and destruction of ocean life.
2010 - Book Adaptation of The Borrowers - Hiromasa Yonebayashi - also played in the Dutch cinema.
2001 - fantasy / fairy tale - most well known film world wide is Miyazaki's Spirited Away. With a worldwide revenue of 330 million US dollars. The film won an Oscar for best animated film in the USA, a Golden Bear in Berlin and the Cinekid Film Award in the Netherlands. (video top right)
