Shopping list for two
200 ml of semi-skimmed milk
20g plain flour
20g butter
sea salt and pepper, to taste
4 slices French sourdough bread
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
4 slices good quality ham, thinly sliced
2 slices of ripe cheese, emmental or gruyère
80 g cheddar, grated
Who wants a ham and cheese melt when you've tasted a French Croque Monsieur Spécial? Nobody, at snazzie ;)) We've started something but it is more than worth it. Due to a lack of French cheese, we sometimes replace it with Old Amsterdam cheese and that tastes great too. Some of the mini-monsters even prefer it!
How to make a Croque Monsieur Special
Put milk, butter and flour in a saucepan.
Bring it slowly to the boil on medium heat and keep stirring.
When the sauce is thick and glossy ley it simmer for 5 mins.
Remove the sauce from the heat and seaso to taste.
Set the sauce aside and preheat the oven to 200°C
Grate the cheddar.
Fry the bread on both sides brown.
Thinly spread with mustard.
Spread a thick layer white sauce on top.
Top the sauce with ham and cheese
Put together and top with sauce.
Sprinkle with lots of cheddar.
Place in the oven and bake for 10 -15 minutes.
Allow the Croque Monsieur to cool 5 minutes before serving.
