1.5 kilos cooking pears (Gieser Wildeman)
250ml water
250 ml red wine or Berry juice
45g caster sugar
1 cinnamon stick
Making stewed pears is an easy job, we make them like our great-grandma used to do. It does take time, but while the pears are stewing we read a fun book with the mini-monsters. When they are playing together, we read what we like, also fun on Sunday afternoon! If the kids also like stewed pears, you can replace the red wine with berry juice.
How to make stewed pears
Peel the pears thinly but leave the stalks on.
Place the pears upright in a roomy pan.
Add the water and cinnamon stick to the pan.
Add the sugar and swirl the water in the pan.
Finally add the red currant juice.
We use Hero berry juice by the Betuwe.
Bring the pears to the boil.
Let the pears softly stew for 2.5 - 3 hours.
Then the pears are nicely red and the liquid turned into syrup.
Don't forget to remove the cinnamon stick before serving. ;))
