We put on our nice warm coats and off we went, to the Island of Brienenoord. As a Rotterdam resident, you drive past it so often when you drive to the South side of Rotterdam or back to the center of the City.
But today we are really driving to the island. Puk bought new binoculars from the money in his piggy bank and he doesn't have to go to school today. Even though it is rainy and cold, we go exploring and we don't regret it!
It is very quiet when we arrive at about eleven o'clock, we don't meet anyone. The trees and shrubs are already turning green, we see green leaves everywhere. When you look around there is water all around you and it is still too. It is beautiful here!
We arrive at De Arend en de Zeemeeuwbrug (The Eagle and the Seagull Bridge). It's beautiful that this bridge is named after the summer holiday home of the same name that was build in the 1930's and stood here until 2016. A lot of Rotterdam born children spend their summer holiday's here.
The stones on the water's edge are beautiful, covered with different shades of moss. The water has a great attraction for Puk, he also finds it very beautiful here. You can clearly see the pillars of the Brienenoord Bridge from here.
But then we see a bird in the water, unfortunately not an eagle or a seagull but it is an also beautiful big heron, the binoculars come in handy now!
We see a lot of pretty mushrooms in the moist soil. But then a big surprise: beautiful cattle with long horns are lying in the grass here, just lazing around. Later on when we are back at homet home we will look up what their names are!
Now we just look at the big animals and the calf that is also there. They are Just snoozing a bit, together. Not disturbed by our presence at all!
It is now well past lunch time, so let's go look for the car. How unexpectedly beautiful it is here! Puk had a nice time running around, he hung in a tree, looked at all kinds of beautiful things through his binoculars and bravely walked past the big cattle. (Which we now know are (tame) Scottish Highlanders :)) )
What an adventure, so close to home! Puk had a wonderful morning and so did we, but now we need to have lunch with hot coffee and tea!
