This year we are making an autumn lantern for the Sint Maarten lantern parade. We are looking forward to it, but this lantern requires some patience! First you are going to make the glue and ours needs to sit for fifteen minutes to thicken. Then we make paper mache from baking paper and stick it on a balloon.
Then the paper mache on the balloon needs to dry overnight. On day 2 we turn the balloon over and let it dry for another half day. Then the decoration has to be stuck on and ... left to dry again! So it takes you about 2 days to make it. But when the lantern is lit you forget everything, because then it is absolutely beautiful!
How to make an autumn lantern
Make the wallpaper glue like indicated on the packet.
Cut the baking paper into long, narrow strips.
Blow up a large balloon and tie a knot in the end.
Find a fitting bowl for the balloon.
Move the strips of paper through the glue.
Stick the paper strips all around the balloon.
Stick layers of paper on top of each other.
Set the balloon aside and let the wallpaper glue dry overnight
Turn the balloon on Day 2.
Pop the balloon when the glue is dry.
Stick the leaves on the lantern.
The leaves do not stay on!
Then we use our glue gun to stick the autumn leaves on the lantern
Stick a paperclip in a stick and lace a thread through your lantern.
Place Led lights in your Autumn lantern and your good to go!
Have lots of fun in the lantern parade!
