What do you need?
different types of tall grass
wild flowers, in various colours
a pair of pruning shears
binding wire or rope
Today the monsters are celebrating St. John's Day at school, in Waldorf tradition. Summer is cheerfully welcomed with a song, sung by the whole school, the children wear wreaths of grass and flowers on their heads and jump over a fire to show their courage. Then they go to a picnic with their class, Saint John's Day is a special celebration.
We got up extra early today, because you can braid the grass wreath a day in advance and leave it outside, until the next day. But the flowers need water and the poppies did not survive even in water. So this morning we finish the wreaths.
This is how you make a wreath for Saint John
Measure the head of the wreah bearer(s)
Place the grass on a flat surface
Dividethe grass in 3 equal parts.
Place the tops across each other.
Place a heavy object on top.
Plait the grass into thick breads.
Bend the braid gently into a circle.
Tie off the ends of the braid firmly.
Use twine or binding wire to securely tie both ends of the braid crosswise together into a wreath, allowing grass plumes and tufts to protrude
Bend the wreath nicely round.
Cut the te wild flower's stems short.
Stick the flowers into the wreath.
Now for the fun part: place your wreath on your head and go to school to celebrate Saint John's Day. Have lots of fun today!
