a spray bottle - later on a watering can
planting sticks
They taste so good, unsprayed cherry tomatoes from your own veggie patch. This year we grow some more, they disappear in an instant! Around halfway March it's the time to start!
This year we grow ecological tomatoes from Dille&Kamille next to non-eco Buzzy ones.
Do they taste different, the Buzzy tomatoes and the Eco's? Which taste best?
Or grow different colors of tomatoes, that's also a cool taste test!
An inexpensive seed tray you can buy everywhere but an egg carton works just as well. In the plastic seed tray we sow the non-biological seeds. In the egg box the biological seeds from Dille&kamille.
Fill the seed tray with soil, put in the seeds and cover them with soil.
Spray some water on the soil with a spray bottle.
Sprinkle seed in the seed tray.
Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil.
Make sure the soil is always humid. If it's sunny it's neccesary to water the tray twice a day with a spray bottle.
Fill the holes in the eggbox with soil and spray on some water to make the soil humid.
Sprinkle the seeds on to the soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil.
Spray the soil in your seed tray again with the spray bottle.
Place your seed trays on the window sill in a light and sunny spot. After approximately 10-12 days the first tiny seedlings appear. Water the seedlings with a spray bottle or you might crush the tiny seedlings.
Now you see your plants grow a bit bigger every day so keep a close eye on the humidity of the soil. If the seedling have grown 3-4 leafs you can repot them.
The biological Dille&Kamille seed germinates a little slower than the non-bio Buzzy seeds. We have to wait a bit longer until the plants are big enough to re-pot.
If the plants are min. 20 cm by May you can move them outside to a sunny spot.
Little yellow flowers will grow on the plants (on the right), they become the tomatoes.
Tomato plants love lots of sunshine but the tomatoes prefer the half-shade.
3 tips
Pick tomatoes when orange, then to colour red put them in a sunny windowsill.
If exposed to too much sunshine the tomatoes will burst.
If the plants grow big you must support them with bamboo sticks.
Good luck!
