What do you need?
½ glass filtered coffee
½ glass milk, whole or semi
a chocolate coffee bean
optional:
sugar
whipped cream
grated chocolate
In Austria the Wiener Melange is drunk, a large glass with 2 parts filtered coffee, 1 part hot milk. When you drink Wiener Melange in the Netherlands (although we wouldn't know where) often a beaten egg yolk with sugar is added(?) But we understand that they have never heard of this in Austria ><
Whipped cream and chocolate shavings are also usually not included. The only thing the Austrians expect from the Wiener Melange is a little chocolate coffee bean on top. The rest seems to have been made up by us, Dutchies. We are not 100% sure, so we make an 'Austrian version' and a 'Dutch' one. Only without the egg, because this coffee is rich enough, with whipped cream and chocolate ;))
How to make Wiener Melange
Take 1/3 glass of milk and heat it, do not boil it.
You may use a saucepan on the stove or the micro wave.
Make coffee, any brand of coffee will do but do not use espresso.
Fill the glass up to 2/3 with coffee.
Fill it up with hot milk, with a small amount of froth.
This is what a Wiener Melange looks like, imagine the coffee bean.
Now for the Dutch one: grate a piece of chocolate.
Fill up the glass almost to the rim with not too stiff whipped cream.
Sprinkle the grated chocolate on top of the cream and stick in a long spoon.
It seems that Dutch tourists also like to order a piece of whipped cream cake to go with the Wiener Melange, how festive!
