Growing your own strawberries is a bit more difficult dan for instance growing tomatoes. The bags of seed are also significantly more expensive. They vary from around 4.00 to 6.00 euro and our bag held only +/- 24 tiny seeds.

But...if you once tasted homegrown strawberries you know these are the best! So we are going to try anyway, with the F1 Sarian hybrid. A strong ever bearing variety. And who knows? Maybe our strawberries will be awesome! You can sow strawberries from February up to and including April so we better hurry!

Fill the holes in the tray to 90% with soil mixed with some fine sand.

We place three tiny seeds in each hole in lightly moist soil.

Cover the seeds with a very thin layer sand or soil, the seeds need light.

  • Spray some water on the soil, also carefully spray the seeds and finally the top soil
  • The strawberry likes to grow in airy soil, so mix the earth in the breeding tray with some fine sand
  • Place the seed tray in the windowsill by a room temperature of +/- 20°C, now it takes 4 to 6 weeks for the seeds to geminate
  • If the seedlings have 2 - 3 leaves you can transplant them to a flowerpot, now they can be outside during the day to harden
  • Put some clay granules at the bottom of the flowerpot, strawberries dislike wet feet!
  • After May 14, the ice Saints, the strawberry plants can be transplanted into the garden or stay outside in their flowerpot

Place the cover on the seed tray and place it on a sunny spot. Because of the cover moisture will appear so you have to water less.

Hopefully the home grown strawberry plants will be just as nice as the one we bought at the garden centre last year!

First we have to wait and see if and what will germinate then we'll talk again. We keep you posted!
