Because a farm has many outbuildings, we aree not yet done working! Today we make a chicken coop in the style and colors of the barn. We leave the wall at the front half-open so that children can easily put the chickens in and out of the chicken coop. We make a gangplank so that the chickens can easily enter and we place a stick, for the chickens to sleep on. You can download the worksheet.
This is how you make the chicken coop
Saw the floor and the walls, to size.
Draw the floor on the MDF then saw it off.
Draw the walls on MDF then saw them out.
Sand all the sawed off edges neatly smooth.
Saw 6 slats to size for the front wall and 6 for the back wall.
The floor and the walls are now complete.
Glue the slats with some interspace to both walls.
Allow the glue to dry really well.
Saw off 4 legs (9 x 9 mm) lenght 2.5 cm then paint the legs, the walls and the floor
Paint the walls and floor on the inside yellow ochre.
Paint the outside of the walls red and the legs yellow.
Saw the plinths to fit the walls
Saw off the sand the plinths.
Paint the plinths yellow ochre.
Saw a small strip off the floor.
Assemble the chicken coop
Glue the plinths all around in the chicken coop.
Glue the front wall in the open floor space the others to the floor.
Allow the glue to dry with a heavy book on top.
How to make the gangway
Saw off a piece of plywood 4 x 7 cm.
Cut the matches to the same size.
Glue the matches on the board.
Measure if the plank fits well.
Paint he gangway dark green.
Paint he back dark green too.
Saw off 2 blocs (9x9x4 mm) and a stick of 14 cm.
Drill a hole in the cubes so the stick will fit then paint them yellow ochre, paint the stick dark green.
Make the roof
Saw out of triplex two roof parts and saw off 4 support slats.
Pain both rooftops yellow, the support slats yellow ochre.
Stick the slats to the walls, allow the glue to dry well.
Glue the cubes with the stick in the chicken coop (photo).
Stick on both roof tops and 4 legs, allow the glue to dry well again.
Place some straw on the floor and the chickens can move in!
Next time we will make a few trees, a vegetable garden and the farmer's wife but then we've had it with the farm for a while!
