With a piece of felt and some twigs from the garden, we are making a Teepee today. A Teepee is a tent in which the Indians, the original inhabitants of America lived. The tent was very handy because, as you may have read in our selection book, Indians were dependent on hunting for their food. They followed the buffalo herds, to hunt them. Then they rolled up their house and took it with them. So handy!
How to make a Teepee
First you make the pattern
Trace a circle around a plate on white paper.
Neatly cut out the circle and fold it in half.
Cut the circle in 2 halves and trace half of a glas on one half.
Cut half the glass on the line out of the circle.
Now your pattern is ready to use!
The plate that we used is 24cm in diameter, the shot glass is 5cm and the coffee cup 7cm in diameter, but it can be any size
Pin the pattern onto the felt.
Cut the pattern from the felt.
Trace a line along the plate.
Draw triangles on the line.
Colour them using textile markers.
Pin the teepee on top and fold 2 flaps.
Close the top of the teepee by sewing crosses.
Cut off the twigs to the right size, bind them together at the top and drape the tent over it
Your teepee is ready to play with.
Next week we will make the residents for our Teepee!
