Bruine bonen met zoutvlees sidepicll

Today is Ketikoti, a Surinamese celebration that is also celebrated in the Netherlands. What is being celebrated? That slavery was abolished. In the Netherlands - as one of the last countries with enslaved people - slavery was finally abolished on July 1, 1873 after more than 200 years. At that time, almost 90,000 people of African origin were released in both Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles.

Before that time, many people were kidnapped from Africa, transported chained in ships, to work in other countries. These people did not receive any money for the work they did and they had a bad life. Ketikoti means Broken Chains in Dutch. The Broken Chains mean we are free.

The book Bruine bonen met zoutvlees by Surinamese writer Ismene Krishnadath and illustrator Gerold Slijngard has nothing to do with this very special day. It is a Surinamese story that has been told to children there for generations. It is about a funny, smart spider called Anansi who is sometimes naughty.

There are many stories about Anansi in the Netherlands, partly because of Sesame Street! In today's story, Anansi makes a promise to the other animals that he may not be able to keep. Or can he? After all, he is a clever spider ... a cheerful story!

3 warm shining stars for Bruine bonen met zoutvlees, from our little listeners and their out-loud readers!
