In picture book The Journey by British author Jonny Marx you can read about the anual dangerous journey when the zebras leave the Nature Parcsacross to migrate across the barren African plains. Every year, in this season, lots of tourists from all over the world travel to Africa to watch the spectacular zebra migration.
When the merciless sun has burned everything that grows there the zebras have to move to an area where they can find food and water. Other animals such as elephants and giraffes join in, they also want to leave the barren, open plains. So the large herd sets off...
Japanese illustrator Hanako Clulow (now living in New Zealand) illustrated The Journey beautiful and with much atmosphere again. She is no stranger to snazzie, we have previously reviewed books illustrated by her.
What we like less about this book is the short, rhyming text. A book about something as special as The Journey in Africa deserves more than 2 lines of simple rhymes in our opinion. Too bad! Fortunately, the front of the book contains brief but better information about what The Journey in Africa entails.
2 stars for The Journey, from the little listeners and their out-loud readers
