One of the most beautiful history books in Dutch literature, containing the darkest, pages in our history that are discussed honestly and made understandable for children, is called: *Het begon met peper* (It Began with Pepper). This book was published one year ago and we are still reading it.

It is difficult to put into words in a short blog how important it is for Dutch children to know the history of Indonesia and the Netherlands. Without sugarcoating it, just the history as it really happened.
This book has been worked on by many people with great passion and energy. All the pitch-black secrets that in older days were banished from history textbooks used in Dutch schools are honestly and clearly brought to light in this magnificent book.

Let there be no misunderstanding about it: the Netherlands does not come off well and rightly so! The profiteering, the slavery, the camps, the pain and hunger that both adults and children suffered. All due to the Dutch presence there, which was truly horrible. It can never really be undone.

The wonderful illustrations in this book were created by Dido Dragmar, who received a well-deserved Silver Paintbrush Award for her work. Her artwork makes the book an even more precious possession for our young monsters.

3+ Golden Stars for *Het begon met peper*, from our young listeners and their readers!
