The Destroyed Island takes place on Walcheren at the end of World War II. Teun and Saar and their family are having a tough time in Zeeland. Fortunately, there's plenty of food, but there are still many German soldiers around. 

When one day notes are dropped  by an airplane belonging to the Dutch interim government, they quickly rush home. Bombardments from their liberators are on the way, who want to drive out the occupiers, but if the dike breaks, the island will be flooded! Where will all the families go?
 
 

This is a book from the series "Dive into the Time of..." and the beautiful story is written by author Marco Kunst, who is originally from Walcheren. Teun and Saar didn't actually exist, but Marco Kunst did speak with various people from Walcheren who experienced this firsthand. The illustrations in this book were made by Emma Ringelding, cartoonist and illustrator of the Dutch language and literature. Together they tell a wonderful story!
