Gnome City by writer/illustator Nans van Leeuwen is a sweet nostalgic picture book. A lot of things happen in Gnome Town and this time it is not told in rhyme. Gnomes and animals work together and help each other. Moreover, the weather is always nice, which is great for the busy gnomes who spend a lot of time outside!
There are all kinds of shops in the city, you can buy flowers there, but there is also a bakery and a grocer. The gnome boys will later take over dad Gnome's busines and the gnome girls hope to become good housewives. Yep, those "good" old days!
There is also a learned gnome doctor living in Gnome Town and that's a good thing! When little mice hurt their tails (and that happens all the time!), they quickly turn to the doctor for a bandage. In the fall, when everyone has the flu and the doctor himself may becomes ill, there is always a grateful patient who helps him out of this pickle. What a sweet, funny old-fashioned book for preschoolers!
3 stars for Kabouterstad, from our little listeners and the readers!
