In Ancient Greece, women made their own clothes. The pattern was simple and almost the same for man, woman and child. It was actually a tunic then called a Chiton. Two rectangular patches were pinned together at the shoulders and a belt was worn around the waist. Rich people pinned the Chiton together with gold brooches. See here what the clothes looked like.
By men the Chiton was worn at calf length, by women to the floor and just above the knee by children. The fabric was wool and linen, woven by the women themselves. The clothes were almost always white, coloured clothes were for rich people. At home everyone walked barefoot, outside everyone wore sandals. Today we make a Chiton for Barbie.
How to make an Ancient Greek Chiton
Sew the cotton together, to get 30x30cm.
Pin a seam on the top and the bottom (25x25cm)
Stitch the seams by hand or on a sewing machine.
When both sides are seamed the dress is ready.
Because we do not have tiny pins or broches the fasten the shoulders and sleeves we sew them with a gold coloured thread
Slide the doll into the dress.
Gather in the waist.
Sew the strap around the waist.
Pin shoulders and sleeves.
Paint the buttons gold.
Sew the buttons on the chiton.
Make a golden bracelet.
Sandals on and Barbie is ready!
Now your Barbie is a real Ancient Greek lady, in her Chiton!
