What do you need?
carded sheep's wool
sheep's wool for filling
a piece of tubular bandage
scissors
yarn and a needle
cotton thread
small piece of yellow wool felt
an embroidery needle
a small wooden bead
Today we make a sweet whitsun dove in the Waldorf tradition, from carded sheep's wool. Every pigeon that is made is different, unique, just like people. It depends on how much wool and how much filling wool you use. Whether you "comb" the wool neatly with your fingers. Where do you sew the beak and how big will your bird be? Fun to see how yours will turn out!
How to make a Whitsun dove
NB! Remember that you should not cut the wool, but pull off tufts, if it is too much
Start with the head
String a piece of yarn through the tubular bandage.
Pull it tight and tie off the thread firmly.
Fill up the tubular bandage with the sheep's wool filling.
Instead of lacing thread, you can also tie off with cotton thread.
Cut off excess bandage and roll the head around.
"Comb" a strand of wool until smooth, with your fingers.
Fold in half and place the head in between.
Cutt off a cotton thread.
Tie and knot firmly, under the head.
Cut off excess thread.
"Comb" another strand of wool.
This strand of carded wool will become both wings
Place the strand horizontal between the vertical strand under the head, tie off the body.
Tie on a thread of yarn, on the birds head, here the beak will be.
Sew the beak neatly on the birds head, with tiny stitches.
The little Whitsun dove is ready now, we attach a thread to it so the bird can fly
Tie a cotton thread on the bead, cut off the excess.
Poke the needle through the body and tie a loop on top.
We hang the Whitsun dove on the Willow Catkins, in the window
Have a beautiful Whitsun!
