Today is a very special day in the Netherlands because Queen Beatrix is leaving the Dutch throne after 23 years. Today on April 30th 2013 is the official so named
abdication, just as on April 30th, 1980 when Queen Juliana abdicated in favor of her eldest daughter, then princess Beatrix.
Now Queen Beatrix is abdicating the throne and as of today, her eldest son, Prince Willem-Alexander will be King of the Netherlands and will henceforth sit on the Dutch throne. It has been a very long time since the Netherlands had a king, this dates back to before 1890!
