Very handy, because the museum is BIG! >
With map in hand, we set off. We'll first look around and then do anything :)) The little monsters love that too; they're used to it. The old farmhouses are beautiful, so fun to see in person and take a peek inside! It's not noticeable in our photos, but it's very busy at the Open Air Museum today!
It's a beautiful day, nice and warm but not too hot. Incredible and also wonderful, once you're inside the park and the people start to disperse, you don't even realize it's crowded. You can look around at your leisure, and there's so much beauty to see!
This is De Caterstee Farm from Kadoelen, built around 1800 and moved from Overijssel to the Holland Open Air Museum in 1942. It's a small farm and was originally a livestock farm. There are box beds in the kitchen, where the farmer and his family slept. This used to be the case in all farms in the eastern Netherlands. Nice and warm in winter by the fireplace.
Staphorst Farm (A rope factory) was built after 1750. Around 1880, Jan Huls lived there with his wife Beertje and their children and grandchildren living at home. That's how it used to be. Staphorst farms are notable for their lavish decorations, in bright colours. Everything was decorated, shutters, walls, tiles, and furniture—everything was equally colourful.
We looked in on traditional old crafts making in the Craft Workshop. We saw a beautiful old farmers cart, decorated with a lovely Goose. The little monsters participated in an activity,: they followed Wiep the Worm, from Plant to Poo, in the Flemish Barn. But the museum is very big, a day isn't long enough to see and do everything. So we'll definitely be back again!
Across the water, we see an little old shipyard, and as Rotterdammers, we're naturally eager to take a look. We're not disappointed; all sorts of old tools and other items from back in the day have been preserved, including some little old boats!
On our way out, we encounter another surprise we missed upon arrival: the SRV Van, completely packed with candy and snacks. The little monsters are very happy, perfect for the trip home! But after 5 minutes on the road, they're already fast asleep. The candy can wait until we're home :)))
Look at the map, see how many kilometers we've covered today - on foot - in this museum! No wonder the kids are tired but anyway, It was a fantastic day. We'll definitely be back, because we haven't seen everything there is to see here yet!
