The Shadow of Toet is a beautiful book for young adults, written by Dutch author Lida Dijkstra. It tells the story of the famous, tragic Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun and his 'shadow', half-sister Amany.
Life in ancient Egypt was hard, even for a king's children. They didn't have to work hard, of course, and they were never hungry, but cunning and deceit, hatred and jealousy were all around them.
The way in which Lida Dijkstra mixes the history of ancient Egypt with her fantasy is wonderful to read. The book is exciting and moving but also educational for our oldest mini-monsters. We have all very much enjoyed reading it. You don't just put the book down once you've started it, a very good sign!
The exceptional illustrations by Djenné Fila fit the story perfectly. You can see, hear and read how she makes the illustrations on her website.
3+ bright shining stars for De schaduw van Toet (The shadow of Tut), from all the young readers!
