St. Martin's Day is celebrated every year at the little monsters' elementry school. They carve out turnips (sometimes beautiful works of art are revealed!) and they practice the songs. The lower grades look forward to singing at selected houses and receiving a piece of candy. The story of St. Martin is well-known to our little monsters!
We bought a beautifully published, thick book with about 150 St. Martin's Day songs. Most of the songs also have music with them. How wonderful is that? The book is a treasured possession; it will last a lifetime and keeps an old tradition alive. It's exciting and wonderful, walking through the streets in the dark with your class and your little light, singing along. The little monsters look forward to it every year!
The songs in this book aren't all originally from the Dutch provinces. There are also St. Martin's songs from Belgium, France, Germany, and Switzerland. We didn't know the St. Martin tradition even exists there. What a wonderful book!
3+ bright shining stars for Sint Maarten / Suntermeerten, 150 songs, from the little singers and their big followers!
