1.5 years ago the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam closed its doors for a major renovation. On May 14, 2022 they opened to the public for the first time. From June 10 to October 7, special evenings were organized in the museum for the residents of Schiedam. Each indicated district of Schiedam got a special admission ticket to pay the museum a visit for free, to view the renovated museum up close and personal. A fun event for the Schiedammers and the museum!
Being real Rotterdammers we patiently waited for our turn until the autumn holidays, but now we went to visit Schiedam. The mini-monsters have never been to this museum, so they are very curious about what there is to see. The stairwell was immediately beautiful, with an artist's work on each floor. We immediately preferred this artwork, we really like the woman who looks back at us and the intense colours of the work.
From top to bottom we have seen the museum, the stairwells, the various floors, the attic and the basement. We think it's a great museum, so varied! With the modern seats outside and the funny firework decorations on mega format (which we recently got on an ice cream somewhere, in mini size). The view from the attic on the beautiful Schiedam is stunning. But enough about the building, now about the art.
There are colourful paintings and drawings by Lotti van der Gaag (1923 - 1999) to admire, in the Festival of Love exhibition. This exhibition is on display until January 15. Lotti van der Gaag is best known as a sculptor, in the 1950s she was involved with the Cobra movement. But her paintings and drawings were underexposed. Many of the works were personally owned by the artist and are being shown for the first time.
There is also an exhibition by the Schiedam artist Piet van Stuyvenberg. He lived from 1901 to 1988 and is seen as an innovator in art. Until January 15, 2023 you can see the exhibition of his sculptures called Hidden in stone.
Also very cool, feel free to take a stool! If you want to look a little longer at a beautiful work of art, you can also do so sitting, in this museum. With a handy light, little folding stool on your shoulder you always have your seat at hand :)
We had a terrific nice afternoon at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, saw a lot and learned a lot too. The gift shop is so beautiful, it's a work of art in itself, the coffee was delicious and we haven't even talked about the basemant yet, we save it because we'll be going there soon, with the youngest mini-monsters!
If you are in the Schiedam area, drop by the Stedelijk, this was just a glimpse of the veil we are lifting here today. Your visit is definitely worth it!
