The Cat in the Hat

Dr. Seuss (Theodoo Geuss Geissel - 1904-1991) was the American children's book writer, poet and illustrator of, among others, The Cat in the Hat and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. After the Second World War, he noticed that American children were bad at reading and spelling. They also found children's books boring and Dr. Seuss wrote an article about it. When the director of the Education Council at Houghton-Miffin read it, he got an idea.He made a list of 250 words that children had a lot of trouble with reading.

He gave the list to Seuss and asked him to write a children's book that only contained these words. That would be difficult, you would think. But it became even more difficult because the books had to be so attractive that children wanted to read them right away. They had to teach the readers to read well, but also to discover the world and solve problems. After 9 months, the book The Cat in the Hat was ready for the printer. The story rhymed and it had 236 of the difficult words from the list in it.

Dr. Seuss' books are still widely read. All American children know The Cat in the Hat and the Grinch, the Grinch has even been made into a movie. Children in other countries - including the Netherlands - know his books to this day. In total he made 60 very attractive books, in rhyme with difficult words and funny illustrations in them, which he also made himself. All books by Dr. Seuss are about something and we like to read that.

One of our little monsters said when choosing a book: "Not a book about school or a teacher, because I already know that. I'm in school myself!". Today we are reading a book about the solar system and it is called There's No Place Like Space. In which The Cat in the Hat goes into space, a fun, educational and exciting book. :))
