Hoot and Howl across the desert is a very cool picture book for a very cool price. It is a picture book but one with a lot of information. The book is made by Dr Vassiliki Tzomaka, artist, graphic designer and illustrator, living and working in the UK. When you look at the pictures in this book you may recognize her graphic design roots straight away! They are cheerfully coloured, with all kinds of shapes and the animals themselves are also fantastically decorated.
The first thing you learn from this book is that THE desert does not exist! This book tells about all kinds of deserts, how they differ, in climate amonst other things, the kind of plants and flowers there grow and which animals live there.
Our image of deserts sometimes totally (and we mean TOTALLY!) does not match reality. Our young monsters find the book fascinating! Many of their questions are answered by extra text or clarified through the glossary or various maps. A very beautiful picture book that makes you a lot wiser!
