Zachter dan zout by Nancy Bosmans

Softer Than Salt is a beautiful picture book by author Nancy Bosmans. The story is about salt production on Bonaire in the 19th century, where enslaved people and children had to work very hard during this time. From morning till evening, they worked in the scorching sun on the hot salt fields, often without enough to eat or drink. 

The main characters in this story are Abena and Felix, two children who dream of freedom. Sometimes they lose heart a little, but they are brave children. Then they come up with a clever plan...

With beautiful illustrations by Lisa van Winsen, a vivid picture is painted of the harsh life of that time. But also of the courage and resilience of the people and children who lived in slavery. It is a sad story that fortunately ends with cheerfulness and the hope for a better future.
